RAYMOND – Alan Sanders of Meridian was named the Hinds Community College Aviation Student of the Year in an announcement included as part of unveiling a new Piper 100i trainer on March 19.

The award was presented by U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, who was instrumental in securing federal funds to purchase the plane. Hinds’ Aviation program is located at the college’s John Bell Williams Airport near the Raymond Campus.

Sanders said he appreciates the family atmosphere among his classmates and instructors in the program.

“There hasn’t been one day where I felt like a stranger, not even the first day. The camaraderie we’ve built is amazing,” he said. “The instructors have done a wonderful job of preparing us, and they will bend over backward to get us what we need. I’m proud to be a Hinds student and I’ve really loved my time here,”

Sanders, 25, is an employee at Marc Inc, an aircraft rental service at JBW Airport, and has earned his FAA Power Plant certificate. He’s on track to complete his course requirements in May.
