The Hinds Community College Raymond Campus Mathematics Department hosted the district seventh and eighth grade mathematics competition, sponsored by the Mississippi Council of Teachers of Mathematics, on Feb. 28.
Each year the middle schools and junior high schools in the Hinds district are invited to send their top two seventh grade mathematics students and their top two eighth grade mathematics students to this competition. These participants take a written, standardized test.
The first and second place winners in each grade qualify for the state competition on March 23 at Jackson Preparatory School in Flowood.
Team trophies of gold, bronze and silver are also awarded to the teams that amass the most total points on the exams.

Individual awards: Seventh grade: First place, Clark Hensley, Clinton Junior High; second place, Becca Irwin, Clinton Junior High; third place, Victoria Gong, St. Aloysius, Vicksburg; fourth place, Shivani Patel, Northwest Rankin Middle School.
Eighth grade: First place, Tanner DeYoung, Clinton Junior High; second place, Jay Lemon, Northwest Rankin Middle School; third place, Brent Styles, Warren Central Junior High; fourth place, Michael Franks, Clinton Junior High.
Team awards: Seventh grade: Gold, Clinton Junior High; Silver, St. Aloysius; Bronze, Northwest Rankin Middle School
Eighth grade: Gold, Clinton Junior High; Silver, Northwest Rankin; Bronze, Warren Central Junior High.
