About Utica

Our Utica Campus has a rich heritage and has evolved into a progressive college location with all the perks of a complete campus environment. The Utica campus, formerly Utica Junior College, was founded in 1903 as Utica Normal and Industrial Institute and is the oldest of Hinds CC’s six locations.

Utica Junior College merged with Hinds Community College in 1982 but retains its Historically Black College & University (HBCU) designation and traditions.

Belong

Develop close-knit relationships in the smaller environment of our HBCU campus. Embrace the culture of your history and grow and develop as you prepare for your future.

Student Government Association

Get involved! Members of student government improve relationships between the campus community and the student body. Help organize activities and promote involvement at the Utica Campus.

STEM

Explore opportunities in careers in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. Our STEM-UP program helps you complete your Associate Degree at the Utica Campus and pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in the STEM areas at four year colleges or universities.

Come For A Visit

It only takes one visit to see what sets Hinds Community College apart from other colleges. When you schedule a campus visit, you'll be able to meet with a recruiter, get a personal tour of campus, and interact with other students. Tours are available by appointment at all six Hinds locations.

Campus Offerings

All of our campuses offer a variety of academic courses needed in your first two years of college in order to pursue any bachelor’s degree. Students will save an average of $8,000 in tuition costs when they attend Hinds CC in their first two years before transferring to a public university!

Each of our campuses also offers a variety of career and technical programs which provide you with the hands-on training you need for successful employment. These programs are 1–2 years in length and offer a career certificate, technical certificate, or an Associate of Applied Science degree.

Whether you commute or live in our Residence Halls, there is a way to get involved in campus life:

Daycare
The Early Childhood Education Center provides a healthy learning environment for infants through age four with half-day, full-day, or weekly rates. Priority is given to our Utica campus students, faculty and staff; but if spots are still available, doors will then open to the community as well.

NEH Grant

The Utica Campus has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant to highlight the work of the campus’ founder, William Holtzclaw, a pioneer in African American education. William Holtzclaw is the founder of the Utica Normal and Industrial Institute, which later became Utica Junior College, and is now the Utica Campus of Hinds Community College. Further information can be found at www.holtzclawinstitute.wordpress.com. The co-directors of the project are Jean Greene, head librarian and Holtzclaw Collection Archivist, and Dan Fuller, English instructor on the Utica Campus, who is also the 2015-2016 Mississippi Humanities Teacher Award recipient for Hinds.

Student Success Center – Utica Campus

The Student Success Center is designed to support the overall mission of Hinds Community College by providing services that will enrich the educational experience of all students. Student Success is designed to assist students in transitioning into the workforce or to a 4-year college or university.

Title III Programs

Funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, designed to strengthen programs and facilities of HBCUs. The programs promote STEM, student success, workforce innovation, and many other areas crucial to a student’s development.

Utica Institute Museum

The Utica Institute Museum exists to tell the story of William H. Holtzclaw’s role in Southern Black Education. As a “little Tuskegee,” the Utica Institute was uniquely positioned to help improve the lives of those in Mississippi’s Black Belt through an emphasis on land ownership and community connections. The museum tells this story through the eyes of her people — Uticanites from the Utica Institute, Hinds Agricultural High School, Utica Junior College, and Hinds Community College’s Utica Campus, a proud HBCU.
