Amelia Blake of Jackson, a mother of three and business major at Hinds, believes that attending college has changed her life trajectory.

“When I started my journey at Hinds, I was terrified. I had tried to continue my education several times, but due to life situations and poor decision-making, I was led down a different path,” she said. “I was incarcerated and just not doing very well. I did so many things that I regret because I was trying to take care of my children and myself.”

Although Blake faced hardships throughout her life, she was still determined to create a better life for her family. Initially, she was reluctant to enroll at Hinds because of her low grade point average, but she decided to push her fear aside and give it a try.

“When I first tried to return to college, I realized that my GPA was very low, which also lowered my self-esteem, but the faculty and staff at Hinds made enrolling in school seamless,” added Blake. “Deciding to further my education was the best decision I have ever made.”

She is actively involved in several student organizations on campus, such as the Phi Theta Kappa, the largest honor society in higher education, and Alpha Beta Gamma, an international business honor society for two-year colleges.

Blake is also the 2022-2023 scholarship recipient of the Mavis and Bill Derden Memorial Scholarship. “I am honored to receive such an esteemed scholarship. This recognition has increased my confidence and reassured me that I am in the right place at the right time,” she said.

After graduating from Hinds, Blake plans to further her studies in business at Dallas Baptist University.
