Four Hinds Community College art students were accepted to the annual People’s Choice Art Competition at the Meridian Museum of Art in July. They submitted original pieces of art, which they created during their art courses at Hinds’ Raymond Campus.

The students who were accepted, and the titles of their sculptures, were Morgan Ainsworth of Vicksburg, Not for Soup; Linda Beasley of Utica, Summer Plaid; Breana Watkins of Edwards, High Heel Classic; and Christena Wiebe of Clinton, Teapot.

The People’s Choice Competition includes works under the categories of mixed media, watercolor, oil, photography, acrylic, D-P-P (drawing, pastel, and printmaking), other, and Best in Show. This annual competition allows the community to vote and decide which work of art will win in each of the eight categories with cash prizes being awarded to the winners of each category.

One additional student, Megan White of Clinton, has been accepted to the Annual Bi-State Art Competition at the Meridian Museum of Art, running August 20 – October 18. The Bi-state is a juried exhibition offering over $3,000 in awards and prizes including the $1,000 Best of Show Award. The purpose of the exhibition is to showcase contemporary artists in Mississippi and Alabama and reward their efforts.

White’s sculpture is titled Bull in a China Shop. She was instructed to create a self-portrait which could be human, animal or a combination of the two. The bust is a human torso with a bull head and is made of clay, and the surface is encaustic, or colored wax. The arm is a plaster cast made from a mold of her arm. The surface is covered in encaustic and shellac, and her hand holds a teacup.
