David Mooney of Jackson, a sophomore baseball player, and Apryl Trimble of Utica, a sophomore women's basketball player, won the Eagle and Lady Eagle Awards at the Hinds Community College athletic banquet on Tuesday night.
The Eagle and Lady Eagle Awards are given each year to the male and female athletes who best represent Hinds Community College. A six-person committee made up of college administrators and faculty votes on each athlete submitted. The athletes are judged on varsity honors and achievements, academic accomplishments and involvement in other college activities.
Mooney holds a 3.94 GPA in the classroom and is a member of the prestigious Phi Theta Kappa honor society. The University of Evansville baseball signee, who was also named Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges, is also a first-team All-State and All-Region selection as a left-handed pitcher/outfielder. Mooney was named Hinds Team MVP by his teammates and coaches as a freshman.
Mooney, who served as a student speaker at the Hinds legislative luncheon in November 2007, is also highly involved with the college ministry at First Baptist Church of Jackson, where he assisted with Hurricane Katrina relief in summer 2006.
Trimble holds a 3.78 GPA and has earned a full academic scholarship to Jackson State University for her work in the classroom. Like Mooney, she has been named Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.
Trimble serves in many capacities on the Utica branch of Hinds, where she is the Associated Student Government (ASG) President and Phi Theta Kappa President. She also earned the Best Defensive Player Award as a freshman on the women's basketball team at Hinds.
Trimble is very involved with her church, St. Peter's Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves as an usher and sings in the choir.
