A memorial service for D.G. “Sonny” Fountain, president of the Hinds Community College Board of Trustees, will be at 3:30 p.m. today (Monday) at Eagle Ridge Conference Center. Visitation is 1 p.m. today, also at Eagle Ridge.


Deward Green “Sonny” Fountain, 71, died Friday, March 28, at his residence in Utica.

Mr. Fountain served on the Hinds Community College board of trustees for 30 years. He led Hinds Community College's campaign to replace the historic Cain Hall that was struck by lightning and burned in 1998.

Construction is expected to begin later this year on a $6.8 million Institutional Advancement/District Administration Building on the Hinds Community College in Raymond named in his honor. The Fountain Family Foundation recently provided $100,000 to fund an endowed scholarship in Fountain's name at the college.

Mr. Fountain was retired from Fountain Construction Company, which he founded in 1959 as Chaney-Fountain Electric Company.  He served in the U.S. Air Force and attended the University of Southern Mississippi and Millsaps College.

Mr. Fountain participated in numerous business and trade organizations. He served as national vice president of the National Electrical Contractors’ Association and was a life member of the Associated General Contractors’ Association. He was on the board of directors of Trustmark National Bank, where he served on the executive board until retirement.

He was active in many civic and charitable organizations, most recently the Boy Scouts of America, the YMCA, the Salvation Army, Rotary Club and the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson.

Mr. Fountain was a life long member of Covenant Christian Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher, elder and choir member.  He was the president of the board of the National Benevolent Association of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and served for 30 years on the Board of Lexington Theological Seminary.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Deward Green and Alice Newton Fountain, and a son, Patrick Henry Fountain.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Bradley Fountain, daughter Cindy Fountain White, sons James Bradley Fountain (Monica), Christopher Green Fountain (Lynette), sister and brother-in-law, Lady Jane Little (Louie E.), sister-in-law and brother-in-law, William W. Rhymes (Jeanine), sisters-in-law, Linda Murphy and Nancy Bowman and one granddaughter, six grandsons and a special family friend, Lewis Mohamed.
