The Hinds Community College Department of Music on the Raymond Campus offers musicians of all ability levels great opportunities in the field of music. If you plan to make music a career or if you simply want to explore music for your own enjoyment, the HCC Department of Music can meet your needs with a vast array of course offerings and outstanding instruction.
Financial Aid
Students who seek financial assistance through the Department of Music have several options from which to choose. Full tuition scholarships are available for Music Majors. Full scholarships for tuition, room and board are available top students in The "Eagle" Marching Band, The HCC Wind Ensemble, and the HCC Symphonic Band, and smaller scholarships are available for members of the HCC Jazz Ensemble. Scholarships from the Music Department may be combined with other financial aid, such as Pell Grants, ACT Scholarships, MTAG awards and others. Application
Students who wish to make music a career should contact Bob Cheesman in the Department of Music at (601) 857-3271 for full details. Admittance is by audition and scholarships are awarded on a first-come basis. Students who wish to join one of the many Music Organizations should contact the appropriate instructor for full details on how to apply. Students who have no musical experience but wish to learn an instrument or take vocal instruction may do so at no extra charge if they are enrolled at Hinds Community College. Facilities
Reeves Hall is home to the HCC Department of Music - Raymond Campus. Within Reeves Hall are the Albert Rowan Band Hall, the Choir Hall, all Music Foundations classrooms, the Piano Lab, the Organ room, the Recital Hall, the Student Computer Lab and all of our instructors' private studios and offices. State-of-the-art technology and spacious facilities give our students an environment that makes learning and practicing a real pleasure. Each practice room has a tuned piano, each studio a tuned baby or full grand. All computers are Macintosh and loaded with the most advanced music composition, theory and word-processing programs and our piano lab is considered to be one of the finest in the state.
Applied Music
Applied music includes all instrumental and vocal instruction: voice, strings, percussion, brass, woodwinds, piano, organ and guitar. Music majors are required to enroll in the appropriate applied courses. These are designated as education or major courses. Applied Music courses are also available to other interested students, no previous instruction required. These are designated as elective or classroom courses. Also, there is no additional charge to take private instruction if you are a student enrolled at HCC, however you may have to provide their own instrument, books and learning materials.
Music Foundations
Music Foundations include all courses that are not performance-related, the exception being Recital Class, which is required of all music majors. For non-majors, Music Foundation courses include Music Appreciation and Fundamentals of Music. For music majors Music Survey, Music Theory Lab, Music Theory, Music History, Music for Children and Music Fundamentals are offered.
