Respiratory Care Technology The Respiratory Care Technology Program is a two-year program that prepares the individual to become a Respiratory Care Practitioner. Respiratory Care Practitioners are primarily responsible for initiating cardiopulmonary resuscitation along with the setup and monitoring of life support systems.
Respiratory Care Practitioners provide treatment for heart and lung disorders by administering breathing treatments, oxygen and drugs. The RCP also performs electrocardiograms, Pulmonary Function testing and sleep studies. Upon completion of the second year, students will be awarded an Associate in Applied Science. Graduates are then eligible to take the NBRC Entry Level Exam (CRT) and the Advanced Practitioner exam (RRT).
The Hinds Community College Respiratory Care Technology Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care. They may be contacted as follows:

Life and Breath The American Association for Respiratory Care offers multimedia that shows the roles and responsibilities of respiratory care practitioners and interviews with real-life therapists, students, and physicians, and shows the various work settings and types of patients, as well as educational requirements.

Admission Requirements
- Application for admission to Hinds Community College Application for Admission.
- Application for selection to the Respiratory Care Technology Program Selection Application.
- Validation of high school graduation by official high school transcript, GED equivalency transcript, or college transcript.
- Official transcripts from all colleges attended, except Hinds Community College.
- ACT composite score of 18 (15, if taken before October 1989)
- Math placement Level = 3 or completion of College Algebra with a grade of C or above
Process for Selection
- Preference will be given to applicants who complete the application procedure by April 15.
- Individuals who have submitted all required admission documents will be considered for program admission based on a rating scale that includes ACT Composite Score and GPA on RCT program pre-requisite courses.
Rating Scale
Prerequisites to the First Clinical Course 1. Eight hours of documented observation in hospital respiratory therapy departments. (Contact chairperson for details) Submit an observation form 2. Completion of the following college courses with a grade of C or above: a. Human Anatomy and Physiology I with lab (not older than 5 years from start of RCT Program) b. Human Anatomy and Physiology II with lab (not older than 5 years from start of RCT Program) c. College Algebra (MAT 1313) or Microbiology (BIO 2921 and 2923) d. Science courses taken prior to admission must have been completed with a grade of C or better, within five years of entering the first RCT class 3. Applicants must attend an orientation session
