FAQ

Court Reporting Technology FAQ

1. I have previous college credits and/or a degree and noticed several courses required for this program are course I've previously taken. Would any of my courses transfer?
Without analyzing your official transcript, we can’t answer this question.

2. Because I work a full-time job, I need classes that will be convenient for me to work and go to school.  Is this possible?
We do offer evening and online courses. However, in order to complete the program as designed in a two-year program, you may have to take some day courses to meet that goal.

3. I notice in your letter that the program is about two (2) years.  What is the average time, schooling included, for a graduate to obtain a job as a court reporter?
Graduation completion is individualized for each individual student as not all students practice the same amount, have the same circumstances, or gain speed at the same rate. The only course where are students are on the same level are in the beginning course and in the academic courses that are not machine speed specific.

4. What is the average time to reach speeds?
That would depend on you individually. A great analogy is typing. The more you practice, the faster you get.  No two students progress at the same speed rate.

5. What percentage of students who enroll graduate and become reporters?
I don’t have this information specific to Hinds as I’ve just completed my first year here and the students I teach started when I did.  Perhaps you may want to view the National Court Reporters Association website for more information: www.ncraonline.org

From 2007 to 2009, four students have graduated.  Two have passed the skills portion of the RPR exam by the National Court Reporters Association. One has obtained a full RPR certification.

6. If the state has a reporter certification requirement, what is the success rate of the school’s graduates?  After how many attempts?
Mississippi does have a certification requirement. Hinds Community College does not track this information as it is not available from the State certification board for confidentiality reasons.

In addition, in order to meet degree requirements, students are required to take the CPAS examination or the Written Knowledge Exam by the National Court Reporters Association prior to graduation.

7. How many hours of live/or and recorded dictation per day per quarter/semester?
That would depend on the courses taken by each student.

8. How often is multi-voice dictation given?
Daily for advanced students and non-theory taking students.

9. Can you give me an idea of what the course schedule will be like if I were to enroll?  How many days a week will I need to attend classes?
A curriculum panel card was enclosed with your information packet. Courses are taught according to curriculum. Day courses are currently Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Evening courses are either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday. Attendance is based upon course(s) taken.

10. What are the class sizes?

There is a maximum seating capacity of 18.

11. How many teachers are employed in the program?
There is currently one full-time instructor and one adjunct instructor.

12. What are the teachers’ credentials and/or teaching or reporting experience?
Associate’s Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, Certified Reporting Instructor, Registered Professional Reporter, Certified Realtime Reporter, Certified Shorthand Reporter, Certified Paralegal, 12 years paralegal, 6 years reporter as freelance and official – Past MCRA President, President-Elect, Vice President, Legislative Chair – Past NCRA Dictation Development Cmte Member, Freelance Community of Interest Co-Chair, PAC Governing Board Chair, NCSA Governing Board Member, MS Board of Certified Reporters Member, 17 years Official Court Reporter.

13. How many court reporting instructors are CRIs (Certified Reporting Instructors)?
See above

14. Is theory taught using realtime? If not, is realtime training given?

Yes. Hinds Community College offers courses in realtime judicial reporting.

15. Does the school have an internship program?
As outlined on the panel card, internship is one of the final courses before degree completion.

16. Am I required to purchase or rent a stenotype writer?

During the student’s first semester, he/she is required to purchase his/her own individual machine.  Hinds Community College does not rent machines.
